What is a Normal Budget for Secret Santa?

The normal budget for Secret Santa gifts range between $5-20 per gift.

A secret Santa budget varies depending on the group of people involved, the relationship levels (i.e., close friends vs. family members vs colleagues vs sports team members), and the number of gifts that will be exchanged.

It is a good idea to establish simple rules from the very beginning so everyone is on the same page with expectations for spending.

A key factor to take into consideration when establishing the budget is how many gifts you will give throughout the Christmas season.

Will there only be one gift exchanged at a Christmas party or will several gifts be given over a few weeks?

It’s also important to determine if it will be a mix of kids and adults. What you include on your list might vary if you are sharing it will a group of friends and family vs. employees.

How Many Gifts Do you Give for Secret Santa?

Traditional secret Santa gift exchanges requires you to give ONE gift and receive ONE gift. The exchange is typically at a Christmas party, office holiday party, family events, etc.

But, I have been involved in many work gift exchanges where there was a gift given every week for a few weeks leading up to Christmas. Some people get a lot of excitement with a gift exchange game that lasts for several weeks.

There is even a 12 Days of Christmas Gifts exchange that some people love. Pick the perfect game and number of gifts for YOUR group and have fun!

Once again, the main thing is to make certain all of the people involved understand the expectations.

Can you Give Cash for a Secret Santa?

While it would be easy to do so, giving cash for a Secret Santa gift is considered poor form.

Other participants are taking the time to find just the right present for the recipient. Shopping for a fun gift for someone you care about is part of the holiday cheer.

It is like doing good deeds. It actually makes YOU feel good.

What are the Rules for Secret Santa?

It’s important to establish rules so the actual intention of the game isn’t ruined.

1. Set the Date of Gift Exchange

The date, time, and venue of the party may impact who is able to participate.

If possible, have a plan for this special occasion beforehand so participants will know if their schedule will allow them to attend.

2. Determine Everyone That Will Be Participating

If at work, post a sign-up sheet to determine participants. If it’s family or friends, just make sure it’s very clear who’s in and who’s out.

A great way to complete a sign-up sheet when individuals lives in different areas is via Google sheets.

People can answer the question fields right there in a shareable doc so everyone can see who is participating as well as the answers to the questions.

3. Complete the Quick Questions

Ensure all participants take the time to answer the questions on the simple template from this post so they get the best presents!

Answer as many of the questions as possible to give the gift buyer a great idea of what you love.

It will make shopping so much easier PLUS you’ll get things you enjoy without having to provide hints.

4. Give a Due Date to Complete the Secret Santa Survey Form

Be specific on when the form must be completed. As I mention several times, expectations are important to make sure it is the absolute best game it can be.

5. Establish Budget and Gift Type

Keep the Christmas cheer by letting everyone know how much to spend. No one wants to feel bad because didn’t spend enough or because they went way over what others spent.

Also decide if you will be exchanging gag gifts / funny gifts, white elephant gifts (low quality gifts), or more traditional gifts.

6. Exchange Names

If everyone is present for the exchange of the names, you can draw the names out of a hat or bowl. Alternatively, you could draw the folded up templates out of a hat.

But, sometimes it isn’t feasible for everyone to be there, so there are a number of Secret Santa generators that can randomly assign names.

Some have everyone write on a piece of paper who they think purchased their gift(s).

It is so much fun to see who really put effort into getting you items you love. It’s also a great way to get know one another a little better!

Then onto more fun games to celebrate this festive time of year.

What is a Secret Santa Generator?

The easiest way to virtually pick secret santa names, it to use a Secret Santa Generator. These assist with the drawing of names but can also assist with organizing the event!
